Liebe Leser:innen,
hier kommt ein Interview mit unserem neuen ersten Offizier Adriaan, damit ihr auch die Menschen, mit denen wir temporär an Bord sind, kennenlernen könnt. 

Adam: Can you tell me some things about yourself?
(e.g. Name, age, profession)
Adriaan: So hello, my name is Adriaan de Vries. I am 28 years old and I was born and raised in a Town called Nootdorp, Netherlands. My profession is being an officer on sailing ships.

Why are you here?
I am here because of a hobby that went a little bit out of control. The more I grew up, the more the boats got bigger and the trips went further away. Its a lot of fun to sail, too. I like sailing on tall ships with trainees, because this is the perfect opportunity for them to learn about themselves, the world and its horizon. It is the perfect opportunity for them to grow and to learn about living with people on a small space.

When did you start with sailing?
I started sailing when I was 7 years old. It was on a small optimist from my uncle. I went to lakes in the north of the Netherlands. My uncle taught me for one day how to put up sails and take them down, how to jibe and how to be careful on a ship. I was basically a kid playing with it. After this day, I went sailing alone and that’s when my hobby began.

What do you like about sailing and
what ships have you been on until now?
I like the fact that you are traveling and you can take all of your stuff with you, you have your house with you. It’s my favorite way of arriving to a new place, a new country. The moment when you are looking at the horizon and thinking: „Is that land over there??“ And step by step you will be able to see what its made of: mountains, trees or/and people. I also like that you are not arriving in the middle of the city, like when you travel with the plane and arrive at the airport. You go on anchor, take the dinghy and go ashore.

I also enjoy the fact that you can share the whole experience of traveling with the people that are sailing with you. And again, it is the perfect opportunity to learn from each other. It is always a great experience and you will take benefits from each voyage for the rest of your life.

Until now, what has been your best experience on a ship?
I remember it being in 2019 on a small sailing boat. It was my birthday, after the Atlantic crossing (21 days). We went to the first island directly after the arrival (the Canary Islands). We got to a bay and there was one tall ship, the Gulden Leeuw. Gulden Leeuw invited us for a barbecue party on the aft deck, not knowing that it was my birthday. After a super good night, I asked for everyone’s attention and said: „Thank you for organizing a great birthday party.“

What do you enjoy doing except sailing?
I like to work on an old Volkswagen van and to go for walks in the mountains. For example in the Alpes and other ones.

Do you have anything else that you want the readers to know about you or in general?
One thing only: you'll have more regrets from the things that you don’t do, than from the things that you do. If you are not sure, just go for it.

Adriaan: Hallo, mein Name ist Adriaan de Vries. Ich bin 28 Jahre alt und bin geboren und aufgewachsen in einer Stadt namens Nootdorp in den Niederlanden. Mein Beruf ist es, erster Offizier auf Segelbooten zu sein.

Warum bist du hier?
Ich bin wegen eines Hobbys hier, das ein wenig außer Kontrolle geraten ist. Je älter ich wurde, desto größer wurden die Schiffe und desto weiter die Reisen. Es ist auch ein großer Spaß zu segeln. Ich mag es, mit Trainees zu segeln, da es die perfekte Möglichkeit für sie ist, sich selbst, die Welt und ihren Horizont kennenzulernen. Es ist die beste Möglichkeit für sie zu wachsen und zu lernen, mit Menschen auf engem Raum zu leben.

Wann hast du mit dem Segeln angefangen?
Ich fing mit dem Segeln an als ich 7 Jahre alt war. Es fing auf einem kleinen Optimisten von meinem Onkel an. Ich fuhr auf niederländischen Flüssen. Mein Onkel brachte mir einen Tag lang bei, wie man Segel setzt, sie runternimmt, wie man eine Halse macht und wie man vorsichtig auf einem Schiff ist. Ich war eigentlich nur ein Kind, das mit dem Schiff spielte. Nach diesem Tag ging ich immer alleine segeln und da begann mein Hobby.

Was magst du am Segeln und
auf welchen Segelschiffen warst du bisher?
Ich mag es, dass man reist und währenddessen seine ganzen Sachen mitnimmt, du hast dein Haus dabei. Es ist meine Lieblingsart irgendwo anzukommen, in ein neues Land. Der Moment, in dem du zum Horizont guckst und denkst: „Ist dort Land in Sicht??“ Und Schritt für Schritt wirst du sehen können, woraus das Land besteht: Berge, Bäume oder/und Menschen. Ich finde es auch gut, dass du nicht mitten in der Stadt ankommst, wie es beim Reisen per Flugzeug der Fall ist. Du ankerst, nimmst das Dinghy und gehst an Land. Ich mag es auch, dass du die Erfahrung mit allen Segler:innen an Bord teilen kannst. Wie schon gesagt: es ist die perfekte Gelegenheit voneinander zu lernen. Es ist immer ein tolles Erlebnis und du wirst von jeder Reise etwas Positives mitnehmen, das dich ein Leben lang weiterbringen wird.

Was war bisher deine beste Erfahrung auf einem Schiff?
Ich weiß noch, dass es 2019 war, auf einem kleinen Segelboot. Es war mein Geburtstag nach der Atlantiküberquerung (21 Tage). Wir gingen zu der ersten Insel, direkt nach unserer Ankunft (die Kanarischen Inseln). Wir gingen in eine Bucht und dort war ein tall ship (Traditionssegler), die Gulden Leeuw. Die Gulden Leeuw lud uns zu einer Grillfeier am Achterdeck ein. Sie wussten nicht, dass es mein Geburtstag war. Nach einem tollen Abend, bat ich um jedermanns Aufmerksamkeit und sagte: „Ich danke euch für die Organisation eines so tollen Geburtstages.“

Was gefällt dir außerhalb des Segelns?
Ich mag es an einem alten Volkswagen Bus zu arbeiten und in den Bergen zu wandern, zum Beispiel in den Alpen.

Gibt es irgendwas, das du den Leser:innen über dich oder generell mitteilen möchtest?
Eine einzige Sache: Du wirst die Dinge, die du nicht tust, mehr bereuen, als die Dinge, die du tust. Wenn du dir nicht sicher bist, mach es einfach.
